You have my sympathy.

Give these "newbies" a few months to surf the net and get an idea
(hopefully) of what this aspect of the world looks like, and then wait for
them to tell you about some really cool effect they just saw, and ask why
can't their web pages do that too. lol. Who knows, eventually some other web
designer might contact them (politely), telling them how their site could be
improved and offer to do it for a really good price.

In the meantime though, I would suggest emphasizing the strengths of a plain
and simple website; how quickly the pages load, the extensibility and
accessibility, ease of maintenance & updates, etc. Maybe offer to add more
features at a discounted rate later on if they should ever want to expand.
