XHTML is an application of XML. It is merely 'updating' the various schemas
of HTML 4.0 to an XML syntax. If a browser doesn't support XML it will not
support XHTML.

The current approach for browsers which don't support XML is to parse and
transform the XML via a server-side application. This is also very useful
for light-weight clients like WAP devices.
