I was confusing XML with XHTML which does require lowercase specifically.
Another casualty of the Alphabet Soup Wars.
That story about the coin flip that someone posted earlier sure explains a
lot (it's totally irrational but it explains it). What are the alleged pros
of using lowercase tags though?

The specification is more along the lines of tags being case sensitive so
<Tag>, <tag>, and <TAG> are three separate tags.

Why did the developers of XML decide to require all lowercase tags when the
rule of thumb for years had been to make all tags uppercase?
