G'day
Bear in mind that not everybody speaks (and writes) US English.
A lady once pointed out that there were a lot of "spelling errors" on my
website (she was trying to be helpful). Turns out she was using a flawed
dictionary :-) Let me try to explain...
I live and work in Australia so I speak and write "Australian English". That
is not always the same as US English. Christopher already hinted at this with
his remark about "colour" vs "color". Then there's words like "organisation"
and "organization" and "center" vs "centre". What about my greeting at the
beginning of this message - is that in anyone's dictionary???
Someone in the USA wanted to send me a check. I'd prefer to see some cash,
perhaps a cheque, but if my bank manager is happy to cash a "check" (and turn
X dollars into X*1.65 dollars in the process), I won't complain <G>.
So you see, it's not ALWAYS a matter of poor spelling, though I see plenty of
examples where it IS clearly the case. Yes, it does annoy me too,
particularly when it's in "official" correspondence.
Regards
