I agree. Good design should go unnoticed.
I work as a tech writer now, but once, long ago, I was typesetter (Agfa
CompuGraphic MCS PowerViews and Integrators).
I miss the control as well. Macs and PCs STILL don't come close in terms of
type output quality. What they did do was make the graphic part really easy.
Now my mom can make a birthday card (which is great). But the type suffered
(and to a degree, so did respect for the graphic arts in general).
I don't know if you are familiar with the markup those machines used, but
the W3/MS/N could learn a thing or two from the old manuals for those
machines
