You're quite right, of course. I generally try to avoid code that isn't
valid according to the W3C spec, because using non-valid code can create
more problems than it solves! :-)
However I came across this particular problem (table background images)
when I was working on a page for the intranet where I work, and was being
asked to create a page to a specified design. The only way I could think
of to reproduce the design was to use a background image in a table, so I
gave it a go. I've used it a few times since then, and so far haven't
heard of it causing any actual problems in any browser.
It's a valid point though. [ Sorry - unintended pun :-) ]
