Re: SHTM?by "Ted Temer" <temer(at)c-zone.net> |

James: As far as I know, "most" programs--including perhaps Composer-- will SAVE as SHTM or STM or SHTML using the SAVE AS command. (Watch NotePad as it often adds a .txt on the end of your .shtm. Just re-name in Explorer or whatever and delete the .txt) However--these programs often do weird things if you try to OPEN a program saved in one of these extensions. FrontPage for example, tries to convert it to HTML and often the results are unpredictable. Two work-around's come to mind. One: Create the page as HTML and then re-name it using your FTP program once it's uploaded to the server. Note: Some FTP programs get upset over this as usually you already have a file of the same name in that directory. Some however, allow you to rename as you upload. In which case, it will replace the old one. Two: If your FTP program is in that first category, (which may include Composer), then simply keep a copy on your hard drive that has been saved as SHTM and upload that. The FTP program should replace it without problems. One should point out that there is nothing inherent in either Apache or NT servers that says that CGI scripts HAVE to be on SHTM pages. CGI scripts are usually in a special directory called the CGI Bin or some such. And--This SHTM sort of thing is controlled rather simply on either server by the appropriate .htacess file or Registry entry. It is usually and/or more likely found when using SSI files on a page. Unless I have missed the point here, your host should be able to eliminate this problem in less than five minutes. Then you could run a CGI script in a regular HTML page. Maybe they just don't want to give you CGI access. If you do REALLY have an odd-ball script, it is very easy to replace it. This list has been alive with URL's for scripts and the subject seems to repeat every week or so. In the possible event that it IS just an uncooperative host, I might point out that such lack of service is years out of date. For every "host" that will not work with you, there are dozens who will--and often for less money. Remember, We all want local Internet access but a host can be ANYWHERE !! I hope this is of some help.
