Bryan:
As a long time FrontPage user, I share your grin. However, some of the most
HTML knowledgeable people I have ever read, seem to be on the FrontPage
list.
But you are most certainly correct. And for quite some time, those who
possessed skills in the many odd typesetting languages made fun of Word
Perfect and MS Word users. Now those people are as obsolete as the languages
they championed.
And--even as we speak--there are some who would say--and not without some
justification--that HTML itself is teetering on the verge of obsolescence
with XML, CSS and other new technology springing up almost daily.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying NOT to learn HTML. Or at least, learn
what the various tags do and how they integrate. But by the same token,
blindly insisting that everyone become an expert--able to accurately jot
down every HTML tag from memory--before they would dare to create web
pages -- --- well is kind of like insisting that no one could possibly work
with Desktop Publishing without learning Postscript.
Or perhaps--no one could learn to drive a car without graduating from a
course in automotive engineering. And, though I may have a degree in
Aeronautical Engineering--much to my chagrin--I have noticed that many other
of my fellow modelers have managed to design, build and fly radio controlled
model airplanes without my "superior" (?) knowledge on the subject.
However--learning DHTML, CSS, CGI, SSI, Perl, ASP, etc. etc. Well--that is a
different, and perhaps even more important kettle of fish.
BTW--that business that Keith mentioned, of MS not "allowing" criticism by
FrontPage users came up on the FrontPage list some time ago. The MS reps
assured us there is no such policy even aside from the legal absurdity of
it.
Again best wishes
