Validator DocTypes

I have been updating an old site and made several changes. In order to make 
sure I hadn't made errors such as unclosed tags or bad syntax I
ran it through the W3C validator. I didn't change the doc type .. this page 
was done HTML 3.2 long before HTML 4 was out. Do I need to change the 
doctype to at least 4 transitional to now use the validator? Or is
there some on-line validator that will allow me to still use 3.2 ?
