Hello Everyone;

I am working on a document for my organization to describe how we should
manage our web related projects (corporate internet site and intranet site).

I am using the 'Best Practices' approach so I am researching what other
organizations have defined as key processes and concepts.

I thought of this group as a contributing source and would like to know what
practices you feel should be included.

Practices used by a web development company may have a different slant than
those used to manage projects within an organization, but I am sure there is
some common ground.

When I come up with the top 10 list I will post it back to this list if
people are interested.  Another research source that am using is an
excellent book..

So to start the ball rolling..  here are some ideas I have..

(and not in order of importance..and not distilled into practices)


1.)Create an  organizational structure which includes major stakeholders
(eg. Marketing, communications, IT) for on-going internal management... eg
Steering Committee

2.)Use focus groups which include key customers in the design phase - (for
functionality and features - not corporate image (eg visual design)

3.)For larger projects create a project web site to post progress reports,
project plans, and provide easy access to resources which may need to be
viewed for approval

4.)Even though a steering committee is used - make sure there is one
executive who is reponsible for the committee, resolving any disputes, and
approving objectives

5.) Survey the employees annually to gather ideas about the Intranet site -
new content ect..



These seem pretty basic - but I think that web projects are fairly new to
many organizations.  Traditional software project management techniques may
need to be modified to accomodate the scope of web projects and the speed
the technology changes.  

So I think the practices should involve a team approach, and encourage
on-going learning of what is state of the art.  Business plans would be
short term eg.. 1 year rather than producing 5 year plans (my organization
produces 10 year plans for everything else...can you image a 5 year internet
plan???)
