I've only seen it make a difference in the "real world" in 2 cases:

1 - You are specifying a font color and want to override the alink or vlink
colors (if they are set) or override the default of the browser.
2 - You are using CSS and want to use something other than the alink color
and/or font style defined in the style sheet for the links.
