My mission is to translate my clients business to the web.

I do sites in the automotive and real estate auction fields.

I devote a lot of time to non-profit sites.

My business is 100% referral.

My first criteria is does the business(client) belong to association(s) in
their industry.

A lot of businesses will belong to groups, but will send the money and not
be actively involved.
You will have problems with them.
They figure they will get something for nothing and will treat you the same
way.

Businesses that joins groups to promote their industry and are Active will
usually be much better clients.

    A. they understand networking and the leap to the web is a small step.
    B. they are more likely to be among the leading edge/early adopters in
their industry.
    C. they are more community oriented, which helps my non-profit projects.

If they do not I move on.

My second criteria is solvency and general appearence.
    A. are they friendly when you first walk in the door?
    B. is the company pride showing?
    C.are they prompt?

If they do not I move on.

I "lose" a lot of work this way, but I don't have a problem getting paid
either.
Life is to short for uphill battles.
