Both of these are excellent points. I might add some additional
ones. Overhead is often a key element in a business' demise. Thus,
keeping overhead low is a key to both the ability to adapt and to
flexibility.
However, frankly the one key element is the need to have "vision." Vision
is an illusive thing and is, in itself, hard to define. It is the ability
to see the gestalt of a "thing," in this instance, the scope of where the
Net might be going, and then to position oneself and one's business
appropriately. While "this client," "this deal" etc. are important, the
need for vision is about seeing beyond the immediate and being open to the
future.
I've written extensively on these issues since they relate to
entrepreneurship. Oddly enough, while the Net has created many more
opportunities to be an entrepreneur, the accompanying skills to actually be
an entrepreneur have not followed. Read on my site under the link
"Articles About Being an Entrepreneur" the articles called "The Need for
Vision," "What Business Are You In?," "Private Laws" and "Set to Fail."
