I am trying to increase my knowledge regarding fonts that work well on the
Web.  I know, for instance, that Verdana is recommended over Arial and
Georgia over Times New Roman.  What are some other fonts that work
especially well on the Web?  Are there a specific set of fonts that work
best?  Do some work better in gif or jpeg form?

I would like to accumulate font families in serif, sans serif, script,
impact and display categories if possible.  I would also like to get some
background on each font (best use, limitations, etc.).  Is there a Web site
that would be a good reference?
