Which is faster? ImageMaps or Gifs/JPGs?

Hello there,

I was wandering which is the best situation when you have an somewhat large
image and want to use parts of it as links.

Which option is faster on the download side? Cut the image in pieces and do
<HREF> on the relevant GIfs/Jpgs or just plainly use all the image as an
imagemap?

I'm sorry being not more specific, but the jpg it's still on production. It
will be a computer keyboard and it's size will be somewhat on the 200x75.
I'm considering for my case a jpg, but i'm curious about gifs also.
