I see so many responding to your query, Carol, that I decided I should, too.

I come from a background of graphic design and typography using
conventional tools (from some ten years prior to the advent of desktop
computers), and have performed the entire gamut of processes in the
printing industry from the tedium of paste-up, to darkroom work with a
litho camera (helps a lot with the concepts in PhotoShop), to the tedium of
running a press and bindery equipment. My particular emphasis, during that
time, was typography, running all of the big-name typesetting equipment.

This exposure to strictly code-based typesetting put me in good stead for
the realm of HTML -- in fact, HTML is considerably simpler, perhaps by a
factor of 10.

After venturing into the realm of electronic publishing with personal
computers (strictly PC-based), using a beta version of an early entry into
the field, Ventura Publisher (now owned by Corel Corporation), I because
aware of the scope of what could be accomplished with these new tools. At
the same time, I because aware of and practiced at using illustration
tools, both vector and bitmap, available for desktop computers.

I have since co-authored three books about Ventura Publisher, assisted by
writing individual chapters for several books on CorelDRAW, written many
articles for magazines about both.

At present, I bill myself as a graphic designer, a web developer, and
illustrator, and a computer consultant, and though I am an independent
contractor, among other capacities, I'm the art director for a small
portion of the ZDNet internet presence, ZDNet AnchorDesk
(http://www.anchordesk.com).

I come to this list for exposure to interesting new ideas -- I've visited
many of the provided by the other users here, and to provide help, when I
can. My areas of weakness lie primarily in other list areas: I want to
learn more about things such as Java, JavaScript (though have a smattering
of experience there), ASP, CGI, Perl, and some of the other more obscure
areas of web development. I have not signed up with some of the appropriate
lists for fear of spending the whole day, every day, just reading email.
One thing at a time.
