they are slides (positive images).

Moon/Bob,
A slide has a much greater range of contrast and
often better reolution than a negative film and print combo.

That is one of the reasons they are used by pro photographers
for colour work for magazines, etc. It would be better to
scan from the slides in a proper 35mm slide scanner
such as the ones from Nikon.

Of course your suggestion would be fine for web work
as the final res and colour depth are compromised anyway.
