Well, that all depends on the image in question.. if parts of it can be
changed to low color GIF, it may very well be better to split it up.. the
only way to know for sure is to cut it up and see which is smaller.. the
combined sizes of the smaller images or the large image.

GIFS of about 32 colors are usually smaller than JPGs.  Keep in mind that
the main determination of size in a GIF is the horizontal frequency of
color change.. if you have a vertical line in the middle of a blank image,
it will increase the filesize by quite a bit.. if you could take out the
line, it would reduce the size significantly.
