That most likely means that the action is set up to do something with your
current selection. If you have not made any selection, then it won't
work. If you are trying to make it work with text, try using the Type
Selection tool (Click and hold the button on the Type tool, select the
dotted T for "type selection", then use the tool like you would the normal
Type Tool.. when done, you will have a floating selection shaped like the
type you entered in the Type Tool Window)
After you have your selection, try running the action again.
NOTE: many actions that need selections to work also require a white or
black background, depending on the action. Try starting with a white
background. If it doesn't work well, try a black one.
