My own (limited) experience, and that of a client, is that there is a very
high overhead with SQL Server, and with IIS.

My experience with talking with Microsoft folks is how wonderful it all
will be, but never anything about performance that I could sink my teeth into.

My suggestion would be to spend a few days putting together a toy
application using each of the scenarios, and measure (benchmark) the
resulting performance. Take a bunch of photos of the grandchildren, the
puppies, your pet fish, or whatever. Then run each through its paces, stop
watch in hand, so to speak.

An educated guess is that pulling a link out of the database, rather than
the graphic each time would use less resources. But whether enough
different to be noticed (or measured or matter) is another question.

Besides, not only will you get insight into performance, but likely some in
how you might (and/or how you might not) want to go about implementing the
production package.
