Newbie to the List - chatroom question

Hi all,

I'm looking for a chat room software that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.  I
do need tracking and archiving abilities but right now I can get away
without the ability to attach things to messages.  Can anyone make any
recommendations or suggestions?
