centring tables

Just attempting to get one or two pages validated, everything's fine except,
you guessed it...  I'm using tables improperly for layout and there is no
height attribute for the table element.  I was using it to vertically centre
the table.  Is there another (possibly CSS) way of achieving this?  Thanks,
