Loading Graphics

Hi people!

This is more of a graphical question, but it is connected to web stuff...
I've noticed that a lot of graphics are not square (as in a lot of the
unneeded space is transparent).  Is this because transparent loads faster
than colour, or is this just something people do.  My graphics are usually
square since I'm usually too lazy to outline the actual pics, so I just set
the background to the one I'm using...
