I know this thread is starting to go off topic, so feel free to flame me
privately :)

Coincidentally, a friend of mine just had a run in with AOL this morning.
Here is his email message to me:

--I tried to sign on today and it said invalid account. They gave me a
number to call. I called the number and they told me that I was TOSsed: I
broke the terms of service therefore they closed my account. I asked for
details and they said I was in a wrestling chatroom using foul language. I
told the lady that I never even went into a wrestling chatroom before and
she asked if any of my kids did. I told her that I don't have any kids. She
then told me, "You never know, you might. It's not our problem. You need to
grow up. Have a good day", and hung up on me.--

I think a couple reason people stick with AOL, is either 1) a lot of the
users don't really understand that you can get the same service through a
local, less expensive provider or 2) they are just looking for a
quick (expensive) way of getting online quickly and without any added
hassles (ironically). AOL is a big name, so people that don't take the time
to do their homework before hand usually just go for the first company that
pops in to their brain. AOL has really succeeded in that area of marketing
:)

I'd find it very interesting to hear some opinions from both users and
sufferers. I don't really get why they go about acquiring Netscape, coming
up with own image format,... if all doesn't really work properly. I'm not
saying other companies are 100% perfect, but it seems AOL is hanging on the
last bit of rope. Then why are there people actually using it?
