Programming Languages

So I am right in assuming that everyone thinks that Java is the way to go
when it comes to learning programming languages?
I have done a little bit of C++ and C in the past and am also looking to
delve into the world of programming.  I am therefore finding this message
flow very interesting to myself and would be glad to hear of the forums
views on this issue.
Also any good beginners books on Java would be a great help so I can buy
them and start getting up to scratch.
