hi ben

it's worse than you think

all your document.writes in jp-sidebar.js don't generate anything at all --
so not only is the spiral image not showing, but neither is your search box
or anything else in that left nav bar

i have a feeling this might be because there's no TR generated by
jp-sidebar.js

;o)

netscape is pretty picky about stuff like that

it might also be the dreaded "document.write-inside-a-table" bug, which
netscape is/was susceptible to

perhaps you could use server-side includes for the nav bar instead -- check
with your web host

anyhow, to answer your original question, you can get an otherwise empty
cell to show its background image in netscape by putting &nbsp inside the
cell, space permitting, or else a 1-pixel transparent gif (remember to add
alt="")

by the way, the spiral notebook with the tabs down the right, some people
think it's been overdone, but i still like it a lot -- you could even make
the home/appts/lionks tabs even bigger...
