That's why I design sites with a fixed width element to centre in the browser. Even 600 wide focus looks better when centred in an 1024 window. With the right sort of bacground you can fit in the smaller window and yet not look like wasted space in the larger.
FWIW I'm now focussing on 800x600, with detection scripts to revise layouts for wider screend when appropriate.
