There are a few advantages to perl that nobody has mentioned yet:

   *  It is versatile. You can use it everywhere, from database interaction 
to log file analysis, formatting your e-mail, process controlling.

   *  Under mod_perl on Apache it is comparable in speed to other 
technologies.

   *  It is free (as in speech and as in beer)

   *  There are some excellent modules like CGI.pm and Template::Toolkit 
that make web page development very easy.

   *  You can write OO Perl.

Its amazing what a skilled perl programmer can accomplish in six lines 
using modules and mod_perl.
