If you are using IE5+, it will automatically go to the MSN search site if it
can't find your URL, and most likely display what they think is the "nearest
fit" along with search results. So it's not a matter of M$ owning the root
domain. It just looks that way.

I forget the names of the sites, but I distinctly remember typing in 
certain sites *without* the leading *www* and coming across a commercial, 
big-bucks site (one of them owned by the notorious M$). When I typed in the 
exact same combination of letters *with* the leading *www*, up popped the 
site I was looking for! Happened twice, recently, and I pay attention to 
little details like exact lettering. Don't lose your paranoia yet, Mike!
