It's XHTML compliant, that's all. And to be backward compatible, you have to
use a space like <br /> so it doesn't break older browsers.

Chuck, is there a particular benefit towards having 'end slashes' for <img>,
<br>, <hr>, etc.?

I've just started seeing some of them crop up and I was wondering what the
point of them was.
