ems won't do you any good for font sizes (at least, they shouldn't) since
the em unit is based on the font point size. If you did define a default
point size, then 10 ems would be HUGE.

Try "Cascading Style Sheets - Designing for the Web" by Haakon Lie 
and Bert Bos, second edition. The website for the book is at 
http://www.awl.com/css. There's a good discussion on using ems in the 
book. The authors help write the CSS  specs.
