I also tested this in NN4.7, IE5.5 and Opera3.6 and did not have any
problems putting a class into the first list item and then not closing it.
Of course, NN didn't apply the style to the list text, just to the number,
but that's another story.

There must be some real world examples of errors produced by not closing
tags, but I concede that, in reality, the major browser makers have probably
built in error-controls for CSS, just as they have for run-of-the-mill bad
HTML coding.

Since this thread has gone on long enough, I'll just close with a quote from
a Frank Zappa song:

I've had trouble in IE4 on Mac because of non-closed LI's. No problems in 
other browsers, though.
