marking quotes separately

What do you think of this method of marking a quote (instead of using
<em> which I guess is the other alernative)
span.quote {
font-style: italic ;
font-weight: bold ;
}
It would be used for inline quotes like this
The doctor said to me, <span class="quote">" Take two of these and
call me in the morning,"</span> so I did.
What will browsers do if they don't understand <span> ?

ps -- there ought to be a site somewhere (if there isn't) where you can
plug in an URL and see what a page will look like in, say IE or Netscape
version 3 or 4 (for those of us who don't want to have to install 7
different browsers on our systems.)
