Thanks to everyone who responded to me off-list.

I believe that I may not have fully explained what I was
looking for.

I'm familiar with regular script driven forms and 'thank you' pages . . .
the technique I saw did not go to a 'thank you' page.

After I entered by email address the page
I was on refreshed and where the input field for my
email once was - was text, that said - thank for signing up ...
The rest of the page stayed exactly as it was.

How is it that just that part changed? Or was the 'thank you'
page designed to look like the original without the input field?
Which gave me that illusion?
