Thank you, John! I flagged this message and have added it to my ever
expanding accessibility/usability resources!

I've been fighting for over a year now to provide accessible web development
services where I work, and my boss is a facts and figures driven individual,
so this will certainly help!

Best Regards,
Sarah Kuehnle

here you go,
some of the figures (some out of date)I draw up on when presenting,
they are more UK European centric Im a afraid but as an addictional
sweetner,

ask your self this

how long do you spend making you web site viewable and useable to those
users who chose to use a Mac (sorry but they are a minority audience)
and how much time do you spend making sure that the disabled can use your
site ? who have no choice about the way they are restricted in the way they
use the web.

makes you think doesn't it?

Over 15% (8.7 million) of people are disabled (18% working
population)
93% of disabled people live in their own homes
Disabled people have a combined spending power of 50 billion (10%
UK total)
There are 6 million carers of disabled people in the UK and 1:4 UK
households have regular contact with a disabled person

Over 1 million people are registered as blind or partially sighted
A further 700,000 people struggle to read standard print
Over 1 million people have a learning difficulty, affecting their
written assimilation
5-8% of the male, and 1% of the female population have a colour
deficiency

The population is ageing, by 2004, 40% will be over 45, when
disability increases
20% of people aged over 50 use online shopping sites
Majority of on-line banking users are over 50
By the year 2025 the world health organization predicts that 20% of
the world population will consist of '3rd agers'.
The 3rd age generation is made up of a significant population of
individuals with multiple disabilities.

Over 10 million (40%) UK households have Internet access, an
increase of 4 million in 1 year.
Predictions are that this will increase to 60% by 2005 and reach 90%
by 2009
By 2009 over 80% (40 million) of UK consumers will be using
interactive services
2/3 of these will not access the Internet on a PC; they will use
digital TV and mobile phones and will experience problems with inaccessible
Websites
