Again--I'm not saying we should ALL start writing for 4x or later browsers.
What I AM saying--is that it's high time we started THINKING about it. Then
each individual would make their own choice as to when and how far to carry
this out, depending on their OWN viewer base.

I'm ever short on opinions . . . here's one for you!

Ted has the bull by the horns here. But the bull is smart enough to know
Ted is 100% correct.

Unless your TARGET demographics REQUIRE writing for low end or special
needs browsers take full advantage of the "innovations" in valid
presentation languages these days !!

Even codgy old me can see we ~ain't~ going backwards, the days of "markup
language" are fading into the past and being replaced by some (potentially)
cool new stuff.

Besides, Ted and I have to hand this list over to the next generation some
day. That's you.

And like me saying it or not, the fact is that we are going to be hard to
replace. You had better all start getting up 20 minutes earlier and working
out. Don't forget to argue fairly the both sides of every issue you think
of to yourself while you are doing it too.

And to answer that age old question (the original one) about table support
in "antique" browsers:

Netscape 2.0 and MSIE 3.0

are the "oldest" big name browsers to support tables. At that version:

Netscape would support "single" tables reasonably reliably, nested two deep
= about 50% of the time if they were well written [meaning no extra spaces
- NN *still* hates extra space in tables !!].

I hate to say it, but by MSIE 3.01b Micro$oft had tables wired. The first
release was weird though - 3.0. By 3.01b it was just slow to render complex
nested tables (still is - IMHO).

HTH,
Fuzzy
<dating himself by admitting he has BOTH versions of these browsers still
loaded on running machines (somewhere)>
