Just checked in both IE and Netscape on my PC - nope, now white space that I 
can see....unless I'm not understanding what you're asking....

Probably the best way to approach tables is to sketch out you page layout 
first on paper.  Then draw a grid which encloses the elements.  This will 
give you a better visual on how to set up your tables.

Beyond that is writing good code - that takes time and experience with the 
different platforms/browsers/versions.  And never hesitate to ask 
questions....  :-)
