Unfortunately, there's no standardized way in XML to attach a notation to
a linked object, nor to anything except element content. We might want to
deal with notations on attribute values and links, perhaps providing some
feedback on the current revisions to XML currently underway in the W3C
Core WG, if that's the direction we decide to head.
