Good point, Mike.  In this case, there's a chance the client isn't
listening, which is something I have run into before, and what I was
thinking of when I made the post.

In any case, however, I prefer the organized, methodical preparation over
the footloose consultation approach.  I'm a programmer, not a salesperson.
I don't mind helping them figure out what they need, though...as you say,
part of the job.  Its when they won't focus I get frustrated...:).

While I do agree with what you say, perhaps others are overlooking a
business opportunity. Consulting with clients can be billable.  That is,
if the client already knows what he (she) wants, great.  If not, add
consulting hours for requirements/definitions to the contract and to the
bill.  After all, this is all part of getting the client where he wishes
to be - even if the client didn't know exactly where that was when
starting.
